Winter Lip Essentials for Smooth and Soft Lips

Updated: Apr 9

While cooler weather provides a nice break from the scorching heat of summer, it comes with challenges of its own. Enter the struggle of dry, cracked, and aching lips. It's about time to kiss those problems goodbye with the help of these winter lip essentials that will leave your lips feeling smooth and soft.

Preface: Chronically chapped lips are something I've dealt with since middle school, so it's safe to say I've tried just about every lip balm, butter, and scrub on the market, and know which ones are worth your hard-earned dime. Here is my list of the must-have lip items to keep in your car, purse, pocket, and everywhere in-between.

Lip Balms

These are the most common lip care products you probably have tons of laying around the house. Lip balm is the first product that comes to mind when you think of chapped lips, but are you using one that actually helps moisturize?

Burt's Bees Moisturizing Lip Balm ($3 - $5)

These lip balms are a classic and a great option for those always on-the-go. They all contain the brand's signature responsibly sourced beeswax, a natural ingredient that conditions dry lips and retains moisture. This lip balm stick comes in a traditional twist-up tube and is the perfect size to throw in your purse or pocket.

Pro Tip: If you want extra shine, try warming it up on the back of your hand before applying to add a glossy effect, but with added moisture!

Vaseline Lip Therapy ($4)

This balm is for those days when you need something rich and creamy for extra healing on cracked lips. Each one contains ingredients with healing properties to lock-in moisture. It also gives off a natural, glossy shine for a subtle pop. Though similar to the original Vaseline formula, it is slightly thinner and comes in a variety of scents for a more enjoyable use.

Bigelow's My Favorite Night Balm Treatment ($7.50)

The previous products are sure to give you the results you're looking for in a hydrating lip product, however, my all-time favorite lip balm is this essential from C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries. This treatment provides the best moisturizing qualities of all the above balms. Plus, it stays on for hours, even under a face mask!

Though it's in the higher price range for a lip balm, it's almost always on sale, so be sure to stock up on more than one if you can.

Lip Oils

If you are looking for something to double as a gloss and a balm on your no-makeup-makeup days, try a lip oil! The word oil usually has a negative connotation when it comes to skincare, but when used correctly, they are a comfortable and lightweight way to spice up your look, while also taking care of your lips.

Versed Silk Slip Conditioning Lip Oil ($9.99)

This lip oil is a moisturizing blend of jojoba, camellia, sesame, and sunflower seed oils - all ingredients that help lips stay soft and hydrated. It does transfer because it's an oil, so don't be surprised if you have to add a little more throughout the day. It'll even give you a bit of a healthy sheen because your skin will naturally glow over time without the help of gloss.

Be prepared to convert to a lip oil lover!

Burt's Bee's Almond Lip Oil ($5.49)

Now this one is a double whammy because it replenishes moisture and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The nourishing and responsibly sourced ingredients really help to instantly hydrate and retain moisture. It's also really lightweight for those you don't like the feeling of heaving skincare.

If you're a die-hard Burt's Bees fan, you definitely need to add this to your collection.

Covergirl's Clean Fresh Tinted Lip Oil ($10.49)

If you would like a slight lip tint, try this out. These affordable lip oils are available in six sheer shades and are vegan. It is made of cranberry seed oil, olive oil, and coconut oil, so there's a lot of good stuff happening.

They stay on for about an hour before reapplication is needed, but leaves lips pretty much soft all day long.

Lip Treatments

Lip treatments are an essential part of keeping your lips smooth and hydrated. Whether it's a scrub, a mask, or an all in one product, you need one in your skincare collection. I always use a lip scrub before doing anything else in my skincare routine so the products will soak in and retain better. My biggest piece of advice: don't be afraid to get messy with it!

Bliss Skincare's Fabulips Lip Scrub ($15.00)

This sugar and walnut shell-based scrub is the perfect mix of deep exfoliation, combined with nourishing ingredients like oils, butter, and vitamins for the softest, smoothest pout you've ever had.

Pro Tip: Apply lightly to avoid damaging skin because this scrub is powerful.

Sweet Chef's Lip Sleeping Mask ($14.99)

For thicker, more intense moisturizers, opt for an overnight treatment like this sleeping mask. It consists of a clean, vegan formula that is thick without being uncomfortable or sticky, and provides the nourishment you need while you sleep. Perfect for those who favor convenience as it's as simple as applying at night and washing off in the morning - but it's even better to add a balm or oil during the day!

Multi-Use Products

Aquaphor Healing Ointment ($4.59-13.79)

You may have heard of this product if you've ever gotten a tattoo before, but its multi-use is perfect for someone who prefers an all-in-one. It's clinically proven to restore smooth, healthy skin and is uniquely created to allow oxygen to flow to help even the most chronic chapped lips.

Just try it and watch it change your life forever!

Bliss' Hydration Salvation Camellia Facial Oil ($22.00)

Another useful product for when nothing else seems to be working are facial oils. I know this may sound a little suspect, but they are truly miracle products for many skin conditions, specifically dry skin.

Bliss has an amazing facial oil that helps give your lips a little plump, rejuvenates dead skin, and replenishes to moisturize.
