The World of Artificial Intelligence & Why Businesses Need to Adapt
Updated: May 15
Do you ever wonder about the future of artificial intelligence? Technology has come a long way and it’s only going to continue advancing. Many questions arise when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI). We aren't sure if AI is beneficial to us or if we should be slightly afraid of it. One thing we do know is that it's developing more each day and it is only going to get more advanced. Let’s dive into the world of AI.
What Exactly is Artificial Intelligence?
Let's start by defining AI. Simply put, AI is a branch of computer science that aims to duplicate human intelligence in machines. Think of it as a computer system that allows machines to behave like humans. AI can read, write, see, hear, understand emotions, speak, touch, move, debate, create, and even read your mind! Here are a few important terms when it comes to artificial intelligence:
Machine Learning- AI-based technique for developing systems to evolve based on experience. Common machine learning applications include self-driving cars, etc.
Artificial General Intelligence- Known as “strong AI” or “true AI” is advanced AI intelligence.
Conversational Artificial Intelligence- Uses AI to replicate human conversation online i.e. chatbots.
Neural Networks- Connections of the human brain through AI i.e. Siri.
Deep Learning- Advanced AI that enables computers to teach themselves.
Reactive Machines- This type of AI uses previous data to make conclusions for current decisions. It is the most basic form of AI, is only reactive, and can't form any emotion or memories to make current decisions.
Limited Memory- This type of AI uses current data to make decisions. This means that machines can look into the past to determine current decisions, but they are only transient. They do not have saved or remembered actions from experience like humans do.
Theory of Mind- This type of AI understands every entity of consciousness, which we but we have not reached it yet. It begins to understand people's actions caused by behavior and emotion. If AI machines with this level of intelligence are able to walk among us, they would be able to understand our emotions adjust their behavior.
Self-Awareness- This type of AI understands its own existence. This is the highest class of systems - it has its own consciousness and self-awareness. Machines would represent themselves and develop human intelligence, or even beyond human intelligence, on its own.
Present Day Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence has made its way everywhere. We aren't aware of it, but we all likely interact with AI on a daily basis. Machines such as self-driving cars, chatbots, etc. are all powered by AI. Apple’s Siri is AI, which provides human-like virtual assistance. In healthcare, machines are being used to diagnose and help scientists develop medicine. AI is used in various fields such as agriculture, retail, sports analytics, security, and so on. Facial recognition is AI, predictive text is AI, and so are computer graphics. A few of the most recognizable companies all heavily use AI, such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook. Netflix, a platform that we all know and love, uses
machine learning to suggest new shows for you to watch. Your smartwatch uses AI to manage your health. Virtual Reality is AI. If we haven't made it clear enough already, AI is everywhere.
Future of Artificial Intelligence
The eventual goal of AI is to solve world issues, some being global warming, cancer, and world hunger. Some believe it could lead to more jobs, and others say it could lead to global unemployment because of automation. Some even feel as though it could possibly be a threat to humanity or the key to human extinction. None of these are certain, but what is certain is that augmentation will be how most people will directly interact with AI for now. This means updating the products we currently have and simplifying the creation of intellectual works. With the advancement of technology comes the ethical fight.
Artificial intelligence strikes excitement and fear at the same time. As mentioned before, the future of AI is uncertain and complex. There’s a lot that goes into it, but one thing is certain, it’s here to stay and it's everywhere. It WILL advance. Is it going to benefit us? It could. Should we fear what’s to come? Maybe, but probably not. We are hoping for AI to be beneficial and interesting, so let’s see what the future holds!
