The Roundup: May

Updated: Jun 10

From new media releases, and must have jams to the over-the-top drama in the world of pop culture, May was popping with lots to talk about. From Rocketman, the MET Gala, Miley Cyrus and so much more, we've rounded up the hottest happenings of May that you won't be able to stop watching, binging, and jamming to.

New to the screen

Just when we thought Disney couldn't pump out any more remakes, they did it again. But this time we aren't complaining. Disney's live-action Aladdin blew audiences away with it's electrifying colors, dazzling effects, and majestic music. From the Disney fanatic to the child at heart and everyone in between, this movie is a must.

Rocketman is more than just an Elton John biopic, it's the timeless story of a man trying to live while being true to himself. The film showcases all the highs and lows, staying true to the musicians roller coaster of a life with the exuberant fantasized flair that only an Elton John movie can bring. In the midst of a slue of musician biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born, Rocketman stands out from the crowd with it's vibrant display of musical breaks scattered throughout the entirety of the film combined with the surreal struggles of loving oneself in a loveless world.

Whether you're feeling nostalgic or just looking for a good laugh, Booksmart is the perfect story of friendship, Gen Z wittiness, and stepping out of the comfort zone. As the two best friends close the chapter to their High School career, the over achievers must cram four years of missed parties and fun into the night before graduation. I laughed, I cried, and yes, I almost clapped. (Don't worry I'm not one of those people)

Must-have jams

Did someone say Summer Pregame? Well grab your red solo cup because we're back at it again with our May MOODay playlist. From Drake to Shawn Mendes, we've got all the jams to get you hyped for summer. Whether your sitting beach side or cruising down the highway, our team has curated the perfect pregame playlist to beat the heat.

One of the biggest surprises of the month turned into the thing we didn't knew we needed to have. After teasing a new release, fans thought Miley Cyrus would just release a single. However, after waiting until the very last day until May, Miley blessed our playlists with a whole EP. The six songs have a unique voice of their own with surprise features from rapper Ghostface Killah and Drag Race icon RuPaul. While it may only be an EP, the release feels like Miley's most authentic self - a bit raunchy here and there, but most certainly a jam.

In May's fashion of surprises, the unexpected collaboration of Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber was no exception. The music video for their new single "I Don't Care" has racked up almost 98 million views on Youtube and fans across social media showed their love for the collab. The video felt very reminiscent of the bright, colorful vibes of Taylor Swift's "Me" music video with the unique addition of a green screen that screamed "I Don't Care". All tea, all shade, but this wave of child-like, vibrant color schemes isn't my favorite. However, music video aside, the song is an upbeat jam that's perfect for those long fun summer days.

If you're looking for a way to change up your daily commute or add some insightful spice to your regular routine, enter TED Radio Hour. The weekly podcast dives deep into ideas worth spreading, ranging from how to overcome setbacks to approaching the world with kindness, and this month, my favorite was "Keeping Secrets." When I say I nearly cried in the car on the way to work, I said what I said and I meant what I said. The collaboration of thought leaders from so many different movements painted a picture of how secrets affect so many aspects of our lives. So next time you get in the car to go to work, or just looking for some wisdom to enlighten your summer, check out this impactful podcast from the geniuses over at TED.

(Do it for the) Culture

If you remember anything about the 2019 MET Gala earlier in May, you remember Camp. The extravagant fashion that walked down the red carpet was jaw-dropping. From Zendaya's magical transformation to Lady Gaga's countless outfit changes, it all had us wondering, what exactly does Camp even mean? To put simply, camp is everything ostentatious, exaggerated, affected and theatrical. But at the same time, as the co-author of the exhibition’s accompanying book, Fabian Cleto, stated, "camp cannot be framed into a sentence or into a definition." Camp is a lot of things to a lot of people, but the one takeaway that the MET Gala sent was pride. A type of pride that cannot be explained in a sentence or a phrase, but instead displayed in full light for the world to see.

And finally, the tea you've all been waiting for: James Charles v. the world. In case you have better things to do than keep up with the dramatic life's of celebrity YouTubers, we're here to fill you in. It all started because of some tickets to Coachella and vitamins, but that was only the beginning. If you're still confused over who's who, we've got all the tea that had us sister shook in our latest article.
